Grandmas Inquiry

My grandmother is an old fashioned Asian woman who lived in a small town in the Philippines and did not know what automatic hand dryers for. Just last year, when my grandfather died, I took her with me here in New York because no one would be able to take care of her.

I told her that if she needed to wash her wands and then wipe it dry but then there are no cloth towels or paper towels available, then, she can use the dryers. “All you have to do is stick your hands underneath the machine and then, hot air will blow out. In a few seconds, it will be dry.” She was so amazed and told me how advanced America is. I just laughed at her.

One time, I pulled out a Purell and I knew she would ask me about it. I told her that if she needed to get her hands clean but then water is not available, she can use the hand sanitizer to get rid of the dirt. She then told me: “Oh, so – even water can be replaced in washing hands.”

I often think about how naïve grandma was. She brought me happiness with the brief time we were together. She died 6 months after that. At least, I got to have great times with her.
